Canoe Intelligence Winner
Without concrete data and metrics to track progress, it is impossible to effectively manage investment processes or portfolios. Canoe Intelligence Inc., founded in 2013, was built by alternative investment industry veterans to simplify and improve alts document and data management.
By actively listening to feedback from clients and practitioners, and by anticipating market trends, Canoe designs tools to address users’ needs and helps them overcome challenges related to owning and managing alternative investments.
Judges noted, in particular, Canoe’s client onboarding process—including an analysis of workflows—as key to the company’s tools being useful for asset owners. According to Canoe, it walks clients through a new workflow, detailing each step and who will own it after implementation. Finally, the company offers training to clients’ staff on how to use the modernized process to ensure it is effective both quickly and over the long term.
Canoe’s head of client success, Tim Loughrey, says: “Traditional implementation practices will often prioritize platform configuration. At Canoe, we emphasize a comprehensive workflow analysis, encompassing both discovery and design, to ensure a seamless implementation experience. We guide our clients through workflow changes and help them see beyond the implementation phase—which is effectively only 10% to 15% of the initial contract term.”
Institutional investors are using Canoe’s automated data intelligence to improve data extraction from investment documents and to improve asset owners’ analysis and reporting work.
Canoe leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning technology “to fully automate document collection, data extraction, validation, and normalization before making the data available to clients via the cloud,” says Deborah Kong, a Canoe marketing associate.
In the last 18 months, Canoe’s innovations included Canoe Asset Data, a tool to provide more access to asset-level data, which are, in turn, important tools that enable more effective alternative investment allocation and decisionmaking.
