New Mexico Teachers’ Pension to Divest from Private Prisons
The $12.75 billion fund has been under pressure to sell stakes in CoreCivic and the GEO Group.
That’s how lock-up companies, in poor odor lately, end up in top pension portfolios.
The pension plan’s stance also means it won’t likely voluntarily divest from GEO Group and CoreCivic.
The review could lead to divestment of CoreCivic and The GEO Group.
The two US companies running private prisons, whose detainees including immigrants caught crossing the US-Mexico border, will no longer be part of the CalSTRS portfolio.
