CalSTRS Names June Kim Senior Investment Director
The California State Teachers’ Retirement System announced Thursday the promotion of June Kim to the role of senior investment director, overseeing the fund’s total fund management division.
Kim, who was a CIO class of 2019 NextGen will oversee the $337.9 billion pension’s portfolio construction, asset allocation, balance sheet management and investment risk across the entirety of the fund. She will report to Scott Chan, the newly appointed CIO of CalSTRS.
“June has nearly three decades of combined investment experience in the public and private sectors and has proved herself to be an excellent leader in her time at CalSTRS,” said Chan in a statement. “I am confident that her expertise and commitment to our mission will continue to strengthen the financial future of California’s public educators.”
Kim, who has been with CalSTRS for 10 years, was previously the investment director of global equity, overseeing management of the fund’s global equities portfolio; she is credited with expanding the fund’s global developed and emerging markets assets. She will also continue to work with the global equities team until the fund appoints a successor.
Prior to her current tenure at the firm, she was principal investment officer of equities at the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association and held senior roles at Northern Trust Asset Management, Deutsche Asset Management Group, Citi and Barclays.
Kim earned a B.A. in business economics from UCLA. In 2019, she was also a Finance Leaders Fellow at the Aspen Institute and is a member of the institute’s global leadership network.
