Investment manager Cohen & Steers has named Jon Cheigh as its new CIO. Cheigh, who is currently the firm’s head of global real estate, succeeds Joseph Harvey, who has been CIO since 2003. Harvey was appointed to the company’s board of directors in August.

As of the end of the September, Cohen & Steers had assets under management of $70.8 billion.

Cheigh will remain as overseer of global real estate and will continue to focus primarily on managing the real estate team, process, and portfolios, the company said.

As CIO, Cheigh will provide guidance and oversight to the firm’s investment teams and facilitate interactions in the department. The firm’s lead portfolio managers, however, will maintain full discretion over their portfolios. The company said the role of their CIO provides strategic direction but doesn’t mandate investment strategy or direct portfolio decisions.

“Through his leadership of the global real estate team, Jon has played a key role in extending our legacy of investment excellence by fostering a culture of collaboration and inclusion,” Cohen & Steers CEO Robert Steers said in a statement. “Jon can continue to lead the global real estate team effectively while leveraging his success in generating alpha and sharing best practices across the investment department.”

Cheigh has been with Cohen & Steers for 14 years and joined the firm and its US real estate team in 2005 as a research analyst. He was promoted to portfolio manager in 2008 and was named head of global real estate in 2012.

Prior to joining Cohen & Steers, Cheigh was vice president of Security Capital Group, where he worked for seven years. He also was an associate at Deloitte & Touche for three years. He has an MBA in international finance from the University of Chicago, and a BA in political economy from Williams College.

Harvey joined Cohen & Steers in 1992 as a REIT analyst, and served as a portfolio manager from 1998 to 2016 and CIO from 2003 to 2019. Prior to Cohen & Steers, Harvey was a vice president at Robert A. Stanger & Co., where he was an analyst specializing in real estate and oil & gas.
