Scott Malpass Appointed TIFF Chair

The University of Notre Dame’s long-serving CIO will lead the $9.5 billion fund’s board of directors.

The Investment Fund for Foundations (TIFF) has appointed Scott Malpass as chair of its board of directors.

Malpass, CIO of the University of Notre Dame’s endowment, joined the board of TIFF Advisory Services in 2011 and will succeed Collette Chilton (CIO, Williams College) as chair in September, the company said in a statement.

TIFF CIO Jay Willoughby—who joined the group from Alaska Permanent Fund last year—said Malpass’ presence on the board was “enormously helpful” to the outsourced-CIO.

“Scott understands the important mission TIFF pursues helping nonprofits, our investment approach, and the market nuances we attempt to mine on behalf of endowed charities,” Willoughby said.

TIFF Advisory Services’ CEO Richard Flannery added that Malpass’ “experience, wisdom, and skill have been critically important to TIFF, and he will continue the tradition of exemplary board leadership provided by Collette Chilton and her predecessors.”

Since taking over as Notre Dame’s CIO in 1989, Malpass and his team have grown the university’s asset pool from $425 million to more than $10 billion. In 2014 he was named CIO’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner.
