Maryland Foundation Names New CIO

The University System of Maryland foundation has named Samuel N. Gallo as its new Chief Investment Officer.

(May 15, 2012) — The University System of Maryland (USM) Foundation has hired Samuel N. Gallo as its chief investment officer, officially starting in July.

Gallo was previously managing director at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

San Francisco‐based executive search firm Charles Skorina & Company assisted with the CIO search.

“Sam Gallo possesses the unique combination of institutional investor experience and a passion for public higher education,” USM Foundation President and CEO Leonard R. Raley said in a release. “We are delighted to announce his appointment.”

Gallo remarked: “I am thrilled to be joining such a world‐class institution. I have spent years working with a variety of investors on many investment and operational issues. I am excited to bring my skills to the USM Foundation to help assure financial sustainability for many future generations.”

Gallo earned BS degrees with high honors in both Accounting and Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign. He is a former member of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees and was the first student trustee in the university’s history to receive full voting privileges on the school’s board.

The roughly $950 million University System of Maryland (USM) Foundation was highlighted in aiCIO Magazine’s 40 Under 40 list.
