Juan Bernal Appointed CIO of Insurer MAPFRE

Bernal’s appointment as investment chief of the $40 billion insurance asset manager is effective May 1.  


The Spanish insurance firm MAPFRE announced on Friday it has appointed Juan Bernal to the position of group CIO, effective May 1, 2024.  

Based in Spain, Bernal will succeed José Luis Jiménez, who has been group CIO of the firm since 2015.  

The fund, which has 50 billion euros ($53.36 billion) in assets under management across its business units, is one of the largest insurers in Spain and in Latin America. MAPFRE, which has a focus on ESG and climate-related investments, offers six ESG funds through its asset management business.  

The fund also offers mutual funds for institutional and retail investors in offerings across fixed income, equity, mixed and global assets as well as alternative investments

Bernal is currently general manager of CaixaBank Asset Management and has held a number of senior positions in banking and asset management across a 25-year career. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business science from the EU business school and an executive MBA from the University of Alcalá.
