The Arizona Public Safety Personnel Retirement System, a $23 billion public pension fund which manages retirement assets for first responders, elected officials, judges and corrections officers in the state, announced Tuesday the appointment of Alexander Dorf as deputy CIO. Dorf will work with Mark Steed, CIO of the PSPRS system.
“Alex brings a deep understanding of alternative investments, broad experience across asset classes, and a leadership style from both corporate finance and military service,” Steed said in a statement. “He will be a valuable asset as we continue to focus on generating strong, risk-adjusted returns for our members and stakeholders.”
As of June 30, 2024, the pension fund allocates 22.9% of its assets to public equity, 22.9% to global private equity, 15.4% to international public equity, 14.3% to private credit, 9.5% to core bonds, 6.8% to cash, 5.3% to diversifying strategies, 2.4% to contractual income assets and 0.7% to capital appreciation assets.
Dorf began his private sector career as an investment analyst at the UPS pension fund in 2015. He was named as senior portfolio manager in 2023 and later joined Goldman Sachs as vice president of private equity primaries, following the outsourcing of the UPS pension fund to the bank’s asset management group. Previously, he had been a field artillery captain in the U.S. Army.
He earned a bachelor of engineering degree in mechanical engineering and engineering management from Vanderbilt University and an MBA from the Goizueta Business School at Emory University.
