Virus Will Become ‘Manageable,’ Vaccine Chief Says

The co-founder of BioNTech believes COVID-19 will stick around, but not be such a threat.

As COVID-19 continues to ravage the world, there’s some comfort that one of the pioneers of the vaccine thinks the coronavirus “will become manageable.”

By the same token, we “need to go back to a new normality, because this virus will accompany us for, still, some years,” Ozlem Tureci, the co-founder and chief medical officer of BioNTech, told CNBC. This German firm developed one of the leading vaccines along with US pharma giant Pfizer.

Her sentiment is in keeping with the widespread hope that a sufficient number of people worldwide will be vaccinated or otherwise immune, so that the coronavirus is just a periodic, although serious, nuisance like the flu.

Over the past 12 months, BioNTech’s stock has risen almost fourfold, and Pfizer’s has advanced 26%.
