Meketa’s OCIO Group Taps Corporate CIO

Rafi Zaman, former head of global equities at DuPont Capital, has been named investment chief of the newly formed Meketa Fiduciary Management.

Consulting firm Meketa Investment Group’s outsourced-CIO (OCIO) arm has hired a new CIO.

Rafi Zaman, formerly head of global equities at Delaware-based investment management firm DuPont Capital, joined Meketa Fiduciary Management on July 27, a spokesperson confirmed. He officially took on the CIO role in September, according to Meketa’s website.

“In 2014 we created a subsidiary business to focus on the needs of the ever-growing market for discretionary investment solutions.”As CIO, Zaman oversees “all aspects of the investment process”—including asset allocation, risk management, and portfolio construction—as well as leads much of the OCIO’s primary research process.

Zaman reports to Meketa Investment Group’s Co-CEOs Stephen McCourt and Peter Woolley.

“The addition of a highly accomplished investment professional like Rafi is an important step in the evolution of Meketa Fiduciary Management,” McCourt said. “While Meketa Investment Group has been providing discretionary investment services for many years, in 2014 we created a subsidiary business to focus on the needs of the ever-growing market for discretionary investment solutions.”

According to CIO’s 2015 OCIO Buyer’s Guide, Meketa had 13 full discretionary clients with a total of $4.4 billion under management as of April 9, 2015. The firm reported having flat and sliding asset-based fee structures.

The new CIO said he was looking forward to combining his “direct asset management experience” with Meketa’s “research breadth and expertise” in providing fully customized discretionary services.

Meketa praised Zaman’s 27 years in portfolio management and his risk management skills “as an enhancement to the structure already in place.”

Prior to spending 17 years at DuPont Capital—which runs the pension fund of chemical technology company DuPont as well as third party assets—Zaman worked as portfolio manager at Martingale Asset Management and director of research at Mellon Equity Associates.

Zaman holds a master’s degree in industrial engineering from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree from the National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra in India.
